A 4-year marine engineering course is an intensive financial investment. Securing a company sponsorship beforehand ensures guaranteed placement as a Trainee Marine Engineer (TME) with structured onboard sea-time, eliminating placement uncertainty after graduation.
Yes. Unlike Deck Cadets who require 6/6 uncorrected vision, Marine Engineering cadets are allowed to wear spectacles as per DG Shipping rules (distance vision up to 6/12 in each eye or 6/9 in the better eye and 6/18 in the other). However, normal color vision is strictly mandatory.
B.Tech Marine Engineering is a direct 4-year degree undertaken immediately after 10+2 (Class 12). Graduate Marine Engineering (GME) is a 1-year conversion diploma taken after completing a 4-year B.E./B.Tech in Mechanical Engineering or Naval Architecture. Both qualify you to become a licensed Marine Engineer.
You start as a Junior Engineer / Trainee Marine Engineer (TME) on commercial vessels. After completing 6 months of sea service and clearing the MEO Class IV Part B examination, you earn your Certificate of Competency (COC) as a 4th Engineer, followed by promotions to 3rd Engineer, 2nd Engineer, and Chief Engineer.
