DG SHIPPING ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA

Academic Qualification
Passed 4-Year B.E./B.Tech or 3-Year Diploma in Electrical, Electronics, EEE, ECE, Electronics & Telecom, or Instrumentation with minimum 50% to 60% aggregate marks.
English Standards
Minimum 50% marks in English language subject in 10th standard, 12th standard, or degree/diploma examinations.
Age Limit
Maximum 35 years of age on the date of course commencement (Individual shipping company caps may vary between 28 to 30 years).
Medical & Eyesight
Medically fit as per DGS rules. Spectacles are allowed (distance vision up to 6/12 each eye or 6/9 better eye). Zero color blindness strictly enforced.

Unlike Deck and Engine cadets, each commercial vessel carries only one Electro-Technical Officer (and at most one trainee). Consequently, onboard training berths are limited. Yes, spectacles are permitted as per DG Shipping medical standards for technical officers (distance vision up to 6/12 in each eye or 6/9 in the better eye). However, normal color vision is strictly mandatory and tested using the Ishihara chart, as identifying color-coded three-phase electrical wiring and automation circuits is vital for safety at sea.
After completing the 4-month residential pre-sea course, you sail as a Trainee ETO (TETO) for 6 to 8 months earning a monthly stipend of $400 - $800.
